In 1999, a proposal was formulated to persuade the Ministry of Health to construct a new hospital for the residents of Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area. The approval for this proposal came in 2001. Subsequently, the design process commenced in 2005 following the Ministry of Health's endorsement of a functional program for the hospital. The contract for the New Sault Area Hospital Acute Care Facility was then granted to a consortium known as HIP (Hospital Infrastructure Partners), which includes EllisDon and Carillion Services as major partners. Once all the necessary arrangements were made, construction began in August 2007. EllisDon approached our company due to our shared affiliations with unions and our status as one of the largest local general contractors in Sault Ste. Marie. George Stone & Sons was tasked with the Concrete Work, Forms & Foundations, and the Slabs & Stairwells. The team at George Stone & Sons successfully completed their work at the New Sault Area Hospital after spending just over a year on site. Our workforce included one Superintendent, five carpenter crews led by our working foremen, two labour crews, and two field engineers responsible for layout.
